A. mellifera scutellata was imported from Africa to Brazil in 1956 to increase honey production, and 26 swarms accidentally escaped into the countryside where the queens mated with drones of the European honey bees. The subsequent poly-hybrid bees were named ‘Africanized honey bees’, and over a period of 50 years, they colonized most of South America and all of Central America.

The male egg is followed by a fertilized female egg, approximately 30 h later ( Rehm and Ritter 1989 ), after which three other female eggs may be laid at 20- to 32-h intervals ( Martin 1994 ). A. mellifera is also mechanically harvested and chipped into ‘bush-based fodder’, where woody material is mixed with any remaining foliage and used as a dry season feed, following treatments to reduce the impacts of high levels of tannin and cellulose on animal nutrition and digestion (Pasiecznik, 2016a, b).
